The McLaren driver just pipped fellow driver and title rival the Australian for the quickest lap in the dying seconds of practice at the Sao Paulo Grand Prix. The British racer, who grabbed the championship lead from his teammate by one point after taking the win in Mexico City a fortnight back, beat the Australian by 0.023 seconds. Before then, Oscar Piastri had been the leading McLaren during the running before sprint qualifying set to begin at 18:30 GMT. Max Verstappen, the other racer in the points battle, trailing with a 36-point deficit Norris, finished in 17th place as his team followed a alternative strategy. Verstappen's team-mate Yuki Tsunoda was the only driver to have an incident, if briefly, when he rotated at Turn Four during the early running. Tsunoda slid over the curbs on exit before spinning across the run-off area, and was fortunate to get away with just a slight brush of the fence. Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton also lost it, at the very end of the practice, spinning around through the quick descending Mergulho turn approaching the last turn on to the start-finish straight. The seven-time champion ended the session in P19, just behind team-mate Charles Leclerc. The McLaren pair were well clear of the remaining drivers, with the German's Sauber in third, 0.619 seconds off Piastri's best. Aston Martin's the Spanish driver was fourth fastest, with the Sauber of Gabriel Bortoleto in front of Mercedes' George Russell and the Alpine of Pierre Gasly and Williams' Sainz.
