The Thunder's star player delivered the decisive points deep into double overtime as the Oklahoma City Thunder started their championship campaign with a 125-124 victory over the Houston Rockets.

Last season's MVP scored a team-high 35 points, including two clutch free throws with just mere seconds left in the second overtime, securing the titleholders a positive start.

The Rockets' big man top-scored with 39 points and also hit a personal-best five three-pointers.

But the Thunder's rookie, who contributed 28 points of his own, played a major role alongside match-winner Gilgeous-Alexander.

"Grit and defence," SGA said of their performance. "We know that when we execute defensively we give ourselves a chance no matter what's going on—shots, misses, fortune or misfortune. We did sufficient defensive work to secure the victory. We're still shaking off rust, but it's a good start."

Before the game, Oklahoma's title banner was unveiled at their arena, while the squad were awarded their championship rings.

Oklahoma City defeated the Pacers in last season's championship series. It was their first title since the franchise moved in 2008 to Oklahoma City from Seattle, who had claimed the 1979 crown.

The Pacers will have the opportunity to get some payback on Friday when they host Oklahoma, while the Houston are back on court on the same day at the Pistons.

In other action, a massive effort of 43 points, 12 rebounds and nine dimes from Luka Doncic was not enough to prevent his current team the Lakers from falling to a 119-109 loss against the Warriors.

Jimmy Butler scored 31 points and Golden State's sharpshooter chipped in 23 for the visiting Warriors.

Los Angeles were without the league's top scorer LeBron James as he is recovering from a back issue.
