The president-elect of the prestigious debating society has been removed from his position after losing a no-confidence vote that came after his controversial online comments about Charlie Kirk.

The motion against George Abaraonye reached the necessary super-majority to oust him from his position, according to an announcement from the organization.

Disputed Comments

The dispute erupted after the student reportedly shared messages on online platforms that seemed to celebrate the death of the American conservative figure, who was fatally shot while addressing a university in the United States.

According to reports, one social media message reportedly stated "Charlie Kirk got shot loool" - using an elongated version of the phrase 'lol'.

The student leader is also reported to have written in a WhatsApp chat with other members seeming to welcome the incident.

Election Results

The vote of confidence was conducted over the recent days, with results announced on Tuesday.

Society announcements showed that 1,228 ballots were cast supporting no confidence, while 501 were opposed the motion.

The announcement stated that the president-elect was considered to have stepped down in accordance with the Oxford Union's rules.

Procedural Disputes

Voting operations were temporarily halted early on Monday after the returning officer was allegedly subjected to "obstruction, intimidation, and unwarranted hostility" from several representatives.

In a response, Mr Abaraonye asserted that the count had been stopped because election administrators believed "no legitimate and true result could be reached as a result of procedural failures".

His response unequivocally denied that any person acting for George had engaged in threatening or obstructive conduct.

Ongoing Dispute

The student maintained that extremely serious issues had been referred to the disciplinary committee and that he continued as the elected leader.

His statement added that he was "proud and thankful to have the backing of well in excess of a majority of students at Oxford" who voted to have a "safe election and oppose efforts to undermine the electoral process".

Critics have argued that any failure to remove him would "signal to the world that the society has prioritized politics over principles".

External Reactions

On recently, Kirk's former chief of staff presented an open letter to the Oxford Union on The Charlie Kirk Show podcast.

The message accused the union of becoming a place where "student leaders openly applaud the killing of a political opponent".

The communication indicated that if the student were to remain in post, supporters would "directly reach out to every U.S. political figure who has ever graced the union's chamber and urge them never again to lend their name".

The Oxford Union had previously condemned Mr Abaraonye's remarks after Kirk's death and confirmed that complaints submitted about him had been referred for official review.

The student leader had been one of several students to discuss with Kirk at the union in May.
