A recent study reveals that people who stop using popular GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop conventional lifestyle programs.
Research printed in a prominent health publication points out that while overweight people often shed about a fifth of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass is regained at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.
"Individuals purchasing these treatments must be informed of the risk of rapid rebound weight gain when the medication ends," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of regain suggests a reversion to pre-treatment weight in about one and a half years.
Comparing Treatments
The study, which looked at 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the results of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.
Scientists emphasize that people who shed pounds through dieting typically have a more gradual weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—once they finish.
The Reason for the Rapid Rebound
Nutrition scientists propose the mode of action of the drugs accounts for the amplified weight return.
GLP-1 drugs mimic a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls appetite.
"Long-term administration of the hormone concentrations far above than normal could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and could reduce responsiveness to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement results in appetite is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating a significant risk."
A Chronic Issue?
Medical guidelines recommend the injections for people with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.
Professionals say that, given the high risk of weight regain, the therapy is often life-long.
This opinion is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "emphasize the long-term character of obesity," similar to managing diseases like hypertension.
User Accounts
Users who have discontinued the jabs explain a intense return of appetite.
"I experienced a switch flipping and you become ravenous," described a patient.
This challenge is worsened if users have not developed permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.
Widespread Use
Recent estimates indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with interest continuing to grow.
- Use is greater among women compared to men.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
- Many access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
In conclusion, experts emphasize that while the jabs are powerful agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone solution and lasting health benefits hinges on combined lifestyle changes.
